What is a Red Tag?

A Red Tag, often called a Stop Work Order, is issued by a building department when construction is found to be in violation of local building codes or permit requirements. Once a red tag is posted, construction must stop until the issues have been resolved and the city authorizes work to continue.

Red tags can occur for projects of any size: from kitchen remodels and bathroom renovations to home additions, garage conversions, decks, and ADUs.

Step 1:

Determine Why the Red Tag was Issued

The first step is understanding exactly why the building department issued the red tag or Stop Work Order. Common reasons include:

The building inspector will typically provide a written notice identifying the violations that must be corrected before work can continue.

  • Construction without a building permit

  • Work that differs from the approved plans

  • Unapproved structural changes

  • Electrical, plumbing, or mechanical work completed without inspections

  • Unsafe construction practices

  • Failed inspections

  • Unpermitted additions or garage conversions
